Evaluation

Within the storyline of my product, emotion was the most important factor as that is what my study was originally on. Emotion is a hard thing to present as an entity, but when represented by characters, narrative and certain events, it can become easy to explore. My film idea ‘Concrete jungle’ followed a stereotypical Hollywood narrative, in terms of the equilibrium, the dilemma and the resolution. It also contained hints of 19th century Romantism, as my focus behind it was to show the powerful relationship between man and Mother Nature. I used different aspects of mise en scene when creating my still frames. I had a play around with different lightings and contrasts to show different atmospheres in different scenes. Also with the way I shot the pictures, using different techniques and angles to show which parts of the picture the audience need to focus on. The genre of my product was to mix adventure with drama, however the romance between Gerard and nature is a huge part of it, though I like that this will challenge the audience when asked about the genre. I see this to be a film classified as independent, as it subverts classic Hollywood narrative, although follows certain conventions.

I decided that from past experiences, I would like to think that the expression of emotion is a very important thing in life. To hold back any natural emotions will hurt a lot more than expression. My aim was to mirror this within my screenplay and to give my film a moral purpose as well as a creative purpose. This also shows why my product falls under the independent film category rather than the Hollywood film category. The area in which I live gave me inspiration for the nature theme of my product. I go to school in Dartford and work at blue water so for me coming back home to the country side is important, and although I emphasised it in my artefact, the rebirth scene at the end of my film is a symbol of this. It entered my knowledge that a synopsis is a brief overview of the plot, with the idea in mind to sell the product or story in a way that does not give it away. A good synopsis should never give away the moral or the message, as this takes away the challenge that the audience love. Other aspects of mise en scene such as props, lighting and costumes are important when it comes to the actual filming or shooting. The have relevant costumes help create the realisation, so I saw it as being very important factor.

The investigation into film emotion and the influence it has on the audience is something that can be explored in so many different ways. As I am also and English literature student I found it easy to write and generate ideas about expression of emotion. I brainstormed what ideas I could come up with that an audience can connect with and feel the same physical emotion as the characters. I came to the conclusion that loss tends to be a sensitive thing for anyone. Anyone that has felt some sort of loss knows how strong it hurts. Hence why the idea of ‘Gerard’ losing his parents came about. In the scene he does not know how to react as he has never felt emotion before, so the pain he felt was unknown to him.
